This morning I was alerted (by @trutter) of a WordPress plugin that greatly improves the UI experience for iPhone and iPod Touch users called WPTouch. When a user hits your blog with a user agent resembling that of these two devices, WPTouch takes over and transforms your blog into something that fits with Apple’s look and feel.

The plugin has a good number of options you can set, including disabling AJAX and fancy stuff to make it load faster (EDGE and even 3G users will appreciate this). There are a slough of other options regarding what’s displayed so be sure you spend some time on the settings page for the plugin.

iPod rumor season is in full swing. According to some accounts, we are mere weeks away from this year’s iterations of the iPod and Macbook lines. Most rumors I’ve heard about the iPod Nanos are that they’re reverting to the form factor of the second generation. I actually prefer the tall, skinny Nano to the fat, squatty Nano.

Here’s a potential (and credible) shot of what the new Nanos might look like:

Photo from Gizmodo

It’s tough to see from the picture, but the Nano’s edges are actually rounded and almost come to a point. You can also expect the Nano’s flash capacity to be upgraded to 16GB. Another possible change for this year’s line is that the price points might shift due to the iPhone being on sale for $199. I hesitate when speculating price, but I’d expect the 8GB version to come down to the $150 price (traditionally $199). The 16GB version, if it even exists, would fill the $199 slot.

Notice that the scroll wheel’s menu system changed when the device was turned on its side. This could just be an image gaffe, but maybe the wheel’s options somehow change when the device is turned. The only way to do that (to my knowledge) is by way of an accelerometer. For some reason, I’m leaning toward screw-up rather than possibility.

The previous is all my speculation and has some credibility to it, but take it with a grain of salt until Apple finally opens up about the new lineup. We shouldn’t have to wait much longer, as Apple usually introduces new devices in early September.

If you’re into Digg, you’ve been following the tech world at all, you’ll know who Kevin Rose is. Check out what he thinks of the new iPods:

It’s my favorite time of the year. Baseball season is in full swing, it’s nice and warm outside, and the days are plenty long. Oh, and it’s also iPod rumor season: the time of year when anything goes and anyone could be right. iPod season generally exhibits traits such as rampant speculation, increased coverage, and ridiculous hype.

As if Apple needs any more riders on the hype-mobile, it keeps pretty tight-lipped about its new line of iPods until it’s time to drop the bomb. That doesn’t stop such forums as The Unofficial Apple Weblog and Mac Rumors from speculating, however. Here’s what I’ve heard so far…

The new line of Nano’s will look more like the previous generation, taller and skinnier. I was personally not a fan of the iPod Fatty because it just looked awkward and, well, squatty.

The new iPod Touch is referenced in the 2.1 firmware (that’s also unofficial for those keeping track at home). There isn’t much in the way of details for the new model, other than that it will likely have increased storage capacity and better software. It would be nice if it carried the same GPS and camera capabilities of the iPhone, but I won’t hold my breath.

Along the lines of the iPod is the Macbook rumors. Word on the street is that the new Macbook could include a glass trackpad and also have other form factor improvements.

Any which way, it’s the time of year when the rumors are as ubiquitous as the current iPods are – and everyone knows the viral nature of the device. I’ll admit that I can get caught up in the hype because the iPod is a wonderful device and I’m always interested to see what new innovations Apple can come up with.
