Well, some people were complaining that their plurks weren’t being sent when their posts were published. Naturally, my first inclination was that something was broken with my plugin, so I dove in and tried to figure out where the code was misleading me. In the end, the cookie needed for the plurking process wasn’t writeable, which would cause the plurk to not be sent. Always something simple, isn’t it?

To remedy the issue, you can manually create a writeable cookie.txt file in
wp-content/plugins/plurk_updater
and that should take care of it. When I say writeable, 777 is preferred, but really your Apache user has to be able to write to that file. If you’re having the same issue and this doesn’t solve it, leave a comment here.

This release enables URL shortening via TinyURL. It’s also a much more skinned down, mu-like plugin. I’ve limited the posting options to include only new posts, as it seems that having all the ancillary posting options was going to cause problems in the future. Thanks to everyone who has brought issues to my attention, it makes for a better experience for the whole. To those who haven’t had problems but keep having to update, thanks for sticking with it.

Head over to the official page to get it now.

If you have anything you’d like to see included in Plurk Updater, let me know.

Sneak Peek: Version 1.5 will enable future posting. This will allow you to schedule posts and have the update sent when the post is actually published.

Plurk recently announced the ability to modify your profile page using CSS if your karma is above 25. There’s really not much I can say about this, other than I’m dumbfounded by the decision but also see it as good at the same time. I like the ability to customize my page (just like in Twitter), yet I’m perfectly aware that people will abuse it (can you say MySpace?).

I didn’t do much modification on mine that’s outside of the default options, though I did throw in a Mario image on the timeline (check out my profile). If you want to remove your dashboard, click the Edit link next to My Profile at the top of the screen. Then, choose the Customize Profile tab. You can enter your CSS in the textbox on that page. If you want to remove your dashboard, enter the following into that box:

#plurk-dashboard
{
width:0;
height:0;
}

You can check out some user tutorials on CSS modification:

zenelements has one here

Plurkular has a pretty good post about the announcement also.

But alas, justice prevails, and we’re able to post to Plurk yet again. Here’s how:

In wp-content/plugins/plurk_updater/RLPlurkAPI/RLPlurkAPI.php, scroll down to/near line 382. There you will find:

$array_query = array(
    'posted' => $posted,
    'qualifier' => $qualifier,
    'content' => $content,
    'lang' => $lang,

);

You’ll need to add a single line of code to that file so it looks like the following:

$array_query = array(

Instead of having text followed by a link, Plurk Updater sends out all the text as a link, as Plurk intended it to be. Also, I noticed there were some incomplete links in my comments, so I fixed them in this release.

Head over to the Plurk Updater page to get it.

Plurk Updater sends a Plurk to your account anytime you create, publish, or edit a post on your WordPress blog. You can pick and choose when Plurks are sent and what text is passed along with it. An example would be “new blog post: Plurk Updater for WordPress ( http://mark.bockenstedt.net/?p=64 )”. The Plurk Updater is based on the Twitter Updater by Victoria Chan and uses the RLPlurkAPI created by Ryan Lim.

Dependencies

Plurk Updater relies on the following packages in order to work properly:

cURL (php5-curl)

Installation Instructions

Download and unzip the Plurk Updater plugin.

Extract the Plurk Updater folder to your wp-content/plugins directory.

Activate the plugin on the Plugins page in your admin panel.

Go to Manage -> Plurk Updater to set the options for posting to plurk as well as your username and password for your Plurk account.

Upgrade Instructions

You should just be able to extract the plugin in your wp-content/plugins directory and let it overwrite the old stuff. All the option names are kept the same, so your data should still be there. Make sure the plugin is still activated if you overwrite the old one.

Please let me know if you have any problems with the plugin. This is really my first attempt at a useful plugin, and I expect there to be some hiccups along the way. I ask that you leave all comments, problems, and suggestions in the comments for this page.

Changelog

Version 1.4 – Added URL shortening via TinyURL. Removed extra posting options to the only option is to update on new posts.

Version 1.3 – Removed RLPlurkAPI to prevent any further conflicts it has caused.

Version 1.2 – Fixed Plurk API to work with new security patch in Plurk. Also found a bunch of classes that were trying to be redefined, so I tried to escape classes that were causing errors.

Version 1.1 – Reformatted the Plurks to make the whole plurk a link with given text, as suggested by Mike Templeton. Also fixed a few bad links in my comments.

Version 1.0 – Initial Release.

Plurk has promise, there’s no doubt about it. However, there are a few things I would like to see things changed/fixed/added. Here they are:

Dump the Karma system. There’s no point in having karma-based “achievements” like we’re all in seventh grade again. Allow us to have all those “achievements” and “perks” from day one.

Dump the stupid dancing banana. I want to punch it in the face every time I see it dancing around plurks. It’s flat-out annoying and has no positive contribution to the site.

Add an API. This is probably toward the top of a lot of people’s lists, so I won’t bug too much about this one since it’s probably coming anyway.

Add SMS support for the on-the-go could-be plurkers.

Don’t put my email address in the reply-to box when I add someone as a friend. I don’t appreciate you disseminating my contact info without me knowing it.

Once your karma reaches 40, you have the ability to change your username, but it evidently doesn’t check to see if that name is in use. Problem can be solved by fixing point #1.

Create some intuitive way to search other Plurkers. I always get confused on how to search for people when I don’t know their username.

The main thing that will help Plurk is more users. The community of Twitter is much larger, but many people are unhappy with how it’s been performing lately. Right now, there’s a good deal of hesitation to jump ship and join another service, but it’s also the time for Plurk to strike while the iron is hot.
