In its Playstation Blog, a Sony rep announced today that it has been working with vendors like Activision, Harmonix, Konami, and Neversoft to “ensure that PlayStation 3 guitars and drum sets will all feature a basic level of gameplay compatibility”. What this means to the PS3 faux-rockers is that the instruments for the upcoming titles Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour will be compatible with each other on a basic level. This doesn’t mean they’ll work perfectly, but it should allow you to use your instruments back and forth between games.
This is something I dearly missed from Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock and Rock Band. Harmonix, the makers of the Rock Band series and Guitar Hero up until GH3, had a patch submitted to Sony to enable interoperability between its guitars and the guitars made by Activision for GH3. Activision said nay, we want money, and forced Sony to pull the patch, effectively forcing PS3 users to buy separate axes for each game.
My question becomes “Will my Rock Band instruments be compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour“? I’ll be damned if I let another set of instruments clutter up my living room. We’ve already been told the Rock Band gear will work with Rock Band 2. After Sony’s announcement, does that push the compatibility another step further?
