Brain Age: The 30 Day Test

July 7th, 2008 · No Comments

This weekend, I purchased a Nintendo DS, Brain Age 2, and Mario. I’ve heard a lot of rumblings about how Brain Age is supposed to improve brain health and activity by using it for simple operations for just “minutes a day”. If you’re unfamiliar with Brain Age, you can check out the description.

I took the Brain Age test on Sunday, July 6th, and it told me my brain age is 40. This was a little shocking, considering I’m actually 23 years old. I would consider myself to be fairly astute and reasonably sharp-minded for the most part. I’ve decided to set out on a quest (if you will) to improve my score.

Methodology

  • For 30 days, I’ll play this game for 15 minutes a day, rotating exercises each day.
  • I will recalculate my brain age each Sunday using the same game each time, which is the Rock Paper Scissors game (aka the bane of my existence). Edit: I feel that the series of three mini-games is a more suitable indicator of progress, since the RPS game is just a load of crap.
  • To keep my mind condition fairly consistent, I’ll try to do this at the same time each day.

Goals

  • The main goal is to reduce my brain age score. I would like it to be under 30.
  • The other goal is to be ritualistic about this and actually follow through with it. I’ve seen people try the Wii Fit Test and fail to follow through.

At the end of the 30 days, I’ll decide if the game actually did any good.
